Aperitifs & Digestifs

French words, an apéritif is for before dinner and a digestif is for after a meal.  In Italian, you would say aperitivo and digestivo. An apéritif is a low-alcohol drink (or cocktails), that is usually dry and meant to stimulate your appetite.  A digestif is meant to stimulate digestion. Examples are brandy, whisk(e)y, port, cream sherry, amaro, bitters, Grand Marnier and dessert cocktails.
